Find the power that is absorbed or supplied

Solution:

Looking at diagram (a), we will analyze each element separately.

P_{2A}= -20(2)

(Negative because the current is entering the negative terminal)

P_{2A}= -40W

Which means 40W of power is supplied by the 2A element.

P_{1}=(6)(2)

P_{1}=12W

Therefore, 12W of power is absorbed by element 1.

P_{14v}=(14)(2)

P_{14v}=28W

Thus, 28W are absorbed by the 14v element.

We will now look at diagram (b).

P_{4A}=(16)(-4)

P_{4A}=-64W

Which means 64W are supplied by the 4A element.

P_{1}=(8)(4)

P_{1}=32W

Therefore, 32W are absorbed by element 1.

P_{2I_{x}}=(2I_x)(4)

P_{2I_{x}}=(2)(4)(4)

P_{2I_{x}}=32W

Thus, 32W are absorbed by the dependent element.
